A 'rip-roaring success' for Ilkley Beer Festival
Ilkley’s Beer Festival has been judged a “rip-roaring success” after sell-out crowds streamed through the doors to enjoy food, drink and live entertainment.
More than 20,000 pints of real ale, beer and cider, as well as Prosecco, were available at the King’s Hall over the two day period.
The festival, which is organised by Ilkley and District Round Table, is now into its 11th year with all money raised going towards local good causes. Last year the event raised nearly £45,000 and beer festival organiser Nick Winterbottom believes the final count for this year’s event won’t be far off that figure.
“Since tickets went on sale back in early December, we have been confident of selling out the event,” he said. “This year’s punters were incredible with a long queue forming on Saturday morning just to be some of the first to get in.”
This year the crowds were entertained with more than120 beers and ciders. The collaboration XPA, brewed by Ilkley and Wharfedale Breweries was hugely popular and a proportion of every pint goes towards Ilkley and District Round Table’s charity fund. The introduction of sloe gin from Addingham Fruit Liqueurs appeared to go down a treat, selling out by early on Saturday evening.
The highlight for many was the unique sound of The Washboard Resonators on Friday night, a duo who played foot stomping blues and swing, and on Saturday, Back Chat Brass, who brought an original take on modern hits.
Lishman’s of Ilkley kept the stomachs lined with an array of pork pies, pasties and salami sticks.
This year’s event also heralded the introduction of a Social Media Wall allowing anyone and everyone to post comments and selfies on the big screen – causing the event to trend on social media on Saturday night.
Trevor Yong, Press and Publicity Officer, said, “We loved the interaction with members of the public this year. We have such a mix of age groups and we want to make the event fun for everyone. The event is clearly focused on the huge selection of beers but we were delighted to see so many just enjoying the event as a great night out with friends.”
Nick Winterbottom added: “Ilkley and District Round Table wish to thank every volunteer and all of our sponsors, in particular Handelsbanken, who have come together to make this another fantastic event. The money raised will go towards helping the local community and help us continue in our determination to support everyone in need in the Wharfedale area.”
Dan Gray, Round Table Chairman said: “We hope that everyone had a great time at this year’s event and we can’t wait for next year. We invite applications from organisations and individuals who may require financial support from Ilkley Round Table.”
In the past year funds raised have supported local organisations such as Ilkley Hockey Club, LS29 Special Needs Support Group and Ilkley Good Neighbours.
